Mission and Vision

The FA's Constitution & Bylaws give a strong sense of who we are and what we do.

Article II of our Constitution makes plain that there are two objectives that form the most fundamental, core purpose of our faculty union:

ARTICLE II: OBJECTIVES

A. The Faculty Association shall foster educational excellence.

B. The Faculty Association shall represent the community of interests of Unit III and the Faculty Association membership.

As you can see, our number one objective is to foster educational excellence for all students who come to Suffolk County Community College. We are an academic union, so of course education—and more specifically educational excellence—is at the heart of all we do.

Our second objective is to represent the community of interests of all of our bargaining unit members (we are known as Unit III at the college) as well as those who have actively joined our membership. And that objective is likewise tied to educational excellence. The FA has long known and long argued that our working conditions are our students' learning conditions. For example, we fight for smaller class sizes because we know that enables enhanced learning atmosphere for SCCC students. We fight for safe and healthy workspace because we know students are in those same classrooms, offices, libraries, labs, etc.

So while the core of our mission is outlined in our Constitution, in addition, as part of our participation in the NYSUT Local Action Project (LAP) grant from 2022 to 2025, we will be working with our LAP team and membership to develop more formal mission and vision statements to help guide the good work that our members do every single day at the college.
