This is your union at Suffolk County Community College.
Since 1974, the FA has represented and advocated for and with our adjunct colleagues who are classroom faculty, librarians, counselors, professional assistants, and specialists on all three campuses. Your elected representatives include Kim Ng Southard, our adjunct coordinator, and your assigned EC representative.
The FA urges all adjuncts to become voting members of the FA. All that is needed to become a member is to complete a NYSUT application form, which will be sent to you by contacting the FA office by email or by phone (631-451-4151).
Membership entitles adjuncts to have a voice in your union and to vote on a contract as well as for officers and representatives who provide the union's leadership and governance. The FA has negotiated hard over the years to ensure SCCC adjunct faculty enjoy a robust set of benefits. You can view some details in our Adjunct Rights & Benefits brochure and see in the list below many benefits which we know are not available to adjunct or contingent faculty at numerous other colleges:
- Seniority rights in course assignments
- Fair and competitive compensation
- Promotion
- Representation by experienced unionists when being questioned by an administrator
- Faculty peer during observations
- Sick days
- Access to the EMHP health plan and FA Benefit Fund for dental and optical benefits
- Legal services (living will, power of attorney, healthcare proxy, consultation)
- Ability to join NYS Teachers Retirement System
- Equal access (same as full-time faculty) to distance education course training and assignments
- Class size limits
- Guaranteed interview during full-time searches
- Dedicated professional development fund (designated for adjunct faculty)
- Tuition reimbursement for SCCC courses for you and your dependents
- Inclusion in department meetings
Being an active member in your union is more important than ever. If you are not a member, however, you will not be entitled to the following:
- Representation by experienced unionists when being questioned by an administrator
- Legal services during disciplinary proceedings (this is important because anyone can make a claim against you, and the administrator by law must investigate)
- Voting on FA officers and contract negotiations
- Attendance at FA meetings, including contract negotiations
- Daily advice and counsel on workplace issues
- Access to AFT, NEA, and NYSUT member benefits, including the following:
- Discount travel and entertainment programs: car and truck rentals, Powell's Books, Buyer's Edge, Working Advantage (movie tickets), 1800Flowers, Bose, AFT subscription services, Grand Circle Travel, Orlando vacations, Wyndham Hotels)
- Insurance programs: life, auto, home, renters, disability, catastrophe major medical, long-term care, dental, vision
- Personal services programs: EPIC hearing, Philips Lifeline, MyForce Heat USA, Propane USA, American Solar Partners, pet insurance, defensive driving courses.
Please consider joining the FA! We are stronger together and we will always be there for you in your position as an SCCC faculty member. Contact the FA office by email or phone (631-451-4151).
