Our union works hard every day to help our members, and our members contribute so much to the life of this college. One of the best parts about serving as the FA executive vice president is that overseeing the promotion process gives me a front-row seat to seeing the good work that our members perform. Consider these numbers from our last promotion cycle:
As I wrote in my “Kickoff to the 2023-24 promotion cycle” article in the February issue of The WORD, promotion is a critical part of the faculty experience at SCCC and these numbers are a real testament to our members’ commitment to this institution. As usual, we will share the lists of and celebrate our promoted members in the September issue of The WORD. In the meantime, I encourage members to always attend our annual promotion workshops where we review the requirements for promotion as well as clarify the process. I hosted six separate workshops this year, both in person and by Zoom. I also want to applaud our FA Adjunct Coordinator Kim Ng Southard as well as Donna Krompinger, PA in the Office of Faculty and Professional Advancement, for hosting two separate promotion workshops specifically targeted to our adjunct colleagues. Those were well attended, and we have received very positive feedback. A few adjuncts who had not really been thinking about putting in for promotion are now more aware of the steps involved and are going to follow through. One said, “I am not really that concerned about the additional money that comes from promotion, but you know what? I really do want the title—I’ve earned it!—so I’m going to do this after all.” We encourage all of our members to learn about what is required for promotion. Don’t count yourself out of the running! Let us in the FA help if you need clarification on the requirements or the process. Email me if you have any questions, and please remember these upcoming deadlines:
