Happy June! The FA thanks all of you for your hard work this academic year.
We know it's been difficult with fewer assignments, lingering pandemic issues and more online training. Your service to our students and the college is appreciated.
Promotions
I am happy to announce that 22 adjunct colleagues were promoted this spring 2022 and their promotions will officially take effect in September 2022. The September issue of The WORD will announce the names of the promoted adjuncts. Congratulations to all!
NYSUT adjunct dues rebate
We are proud that the idea for a NYSUT adjunct dues rebate came from our local. This is a process by which if a member pays more than full dues to NYSUT in an academic/school year, they may apply for a refund of those amounts paid beyond full state dues, which are currently $378.
Over the years, we worked hard in the FA to put this item on the agenda at the NYSUT Representative Assembly—and our efforts will literally pay off for our eligible adjunct colleagues. Adjuncts who meet the criteria should contact me for the application form.
2021 adjunct task force survey report
Below is a brief summary of the 2021 adjunct survey report presented by Kerry Spooner, chair of the adjunct task force, at the March 14 EC meeting.
Of the 436 respondents, 431 are FA members. 81% are classroom faculty, 17% PAs, 4% counselors, 4% librarians, 1% specialist and 1% coordinator. 67% of respondents are over age 51 and 83% identify as white, so there's a need at the college to work on diversity.
Kerry reported that one thing we focused on was the negotiations priorities section since that was the task force's charge. Areas of importance to our adjunct members are shown below:
- Increased inclusion in department/area, campus, or college-wide decision-making (e.g., department meetings, governance, committees)
- Workplace conditions (e.g., office space, office materials/supplies, sign-in sheet location, etc.)
- Increased pay per contact hour
- Greater preference to adjuncts when filling full-time lines
- Changes in the assignment process regarding campus preferences and time availabilities (time blocks)
- Changes in the assignment process regarding the seniority system and how assignments are made
This information will be compared with the information collected from the comprehensive 2022 negotiations survey to assess if the areas of importance have remained the same. Finally, the task force will forward a full report to the negotiations team for review. We thank Kerry and the rest of the task force for their time and service.
Seniority list
I worked with Dean Chris Gherardi from Adjunct Services and Bob Leech from Information Technology Services to create a more accessible seniority list for adjuncts. While it took time to get permission to start this project, create a computer program, remove all personally identifiable information and check multiple drafts of the list for accuracy, it was worth it. A print copy of the spring 2022 adjunct seniority list is now available in the FA office and will soon be available in each campus executive dean's office. These lists, which are view only and not to be copied to take home, will be updated by Adjunct Services each fall and spring semester so you can see where you stand in relation to others on the list.
We thank Chris and Bob for their effort and time to complete this project.
Adjuncts can now access their seniority rank in multiple ways:
- Contact me as FA adjunct coordinator: kimn@fascc.org
- Check MySCCC
- Visit the FA office on the Ammerman Campus: Room 224J, Southampton Building (during the summer it's wise to contact Anita at 631-451-4151 or anita@fascc.org to confirm she will be in the office on the date you wish to visit)
