Mosaic strides and pinwheel strides
Joan Cook

  ACS's virtual mosaic

Because we cannot make strides in person this year, the American Cancer Society is offering new ways to participate and donate, including a virtual mosaic and pinwheel garden.

Many of us are aware of someone who has been affected by breast cancer. On Long Island, an average of nearly 2,400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and 440 die each year from breast cancer. Newsday reports that Nassau County ranks 7th and Suffolk County ranks 17th for breast cancer in the state, according to state health department statistics from 2011-15.

That’s why we believe that it’s important to show our support for all those who have been affected by this disease.

Last year TEAM FA contributed $1,110, to the $728,000 raised at the Making Strides of Eastern Long Island walk. We are part of the larger NYSUT family that has raised more than $15 million since becoming a flagship sponsor of this event in 2002.

TEAM FA is participating in Making Strides virtually this year. Here are some ways you can show your support:

  1. Virtual Mosaic — Make a donation to TEAM FA then upload a picture to a Virtual Mosaic. Get creative! Share a tribute to someone or a photo of you Making Strides. Write a caption and include TEAM FA in your description.

  2. Pinwheel Tribute — Make a $10 donation and dedicate a Strides Tribute Garden Pinwheel in honor or memory of someone. Challenge ten friends to make a $10 donation.

This year’s fundraising event is dedicated to the memory of Sheila Goldberg. Sheila was a NYSUT retiree and activist credited with founding the relationship between her NYSUT local and the American Cancer Society, which grew to include all regions across New York State.

Please consider supporting TEAM FA. Together we will raise awareness and provide funds to fight breast cancer with research, information, services and access to mammograms for women who need them.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
