FYI: Updates from the Executive Council and other news of note

  Dante Morelli

Congratulations to FA President Dante Morelli for receiving a 2023 NYSUT Higher Education Member of the Year Award! Please take a moment to view Dante's NYSUT award video, as he celebrates the good work done by FA members on behalf of the college.

  • Congratulations to Dante for NYSUT’s Higher Ed Member of the Year Award: Please join us in congratulating FA President Dante Morelli for receiving this year’s NYSUT Higher Education Member of the Year Award.

Dante speaks very graciously about the good work of the FA in the video NYSUT created for this honor. Thank you, Dante, for all you do!

  • Updated FA Benefit Fund Booklet is now available: The trustees of the FA Benefit Fund, which include all six FA officers and Sean Tvelia as president of the Guild, have been working over the past year to update the FA Benefits Booklet. Since distribution of the previous Benefits Booklet in 2016, the trustees have made many changes that reflect the supplemental benefits members want and use.

The newly updated 2023 Benefits Booklet describes all the benefits currently available to covered members and the procedures to access those benefits through the Benefit Fund. Access the pdf on the FA website: 2023 FA Benefits Booklet.

  • The Calm app is free for FA members: The very popular premium Calm app subscription is now free to in-service FA members as well as up to five dependents through NYSUT Member Benefits. As Healthline recently reported, Calm is an award-winning mindfulness app that’s available for iOS, Android and desktop with over 100 million downloads.

To access the app for free, follow the instructions on this NYSUT Member Benefits webpage and please note that to add dependents you must do so on the calm.com site and not in the app itself.

  • FA retirement workshop to be held in fall: The FA typically hosts a retirement workshop for members each spring, hosted by Gerry McGahran of Stacey Braun Associates, Mary Kaffaga of the Benefit Fund and EMHP representatives. This year, however, we will be hosting the workshop in the fall semester in collaboration with the Guild. Stay tuned for our retirement workshop announcement in the fall.

  • FA and Benefit Fund summer hours: The FA office and the Benefit Fund will be open this summer but closed on Fridays. Given their various vacation days, it’s always wise to email or call Anita (anita@fascc.org, 631-451-4151) or Mary (mary@fascc.org, 631-451-4323) before you swing by.

  • Summer 2023 adjunct, overload and other pay dates: According to payroll, faculty and classroom PA’s working this summer can expect to be paid during the sessions during which they are working.

    » 1st six-week session (runs May 23 to July 6): June 15, June 29 and July 13

    » Eight-week session (runs May 23 to July 19): June 15, June 29, July 13 and July 27

    » 2nd six-week session (runs July 10 to August 16): July 27, August 10 and August 24

Nonclassroom PA’s, librarians and members working summer OTA ten-week program and other* assignments will be paid on six of the summer payrolls—again, to the degree possible, during the summer sessions in which you’re working: June 15, June 29, July 13, July 27, August 10 and August 24. Payroll indicates that we cannot be more more specific than this because not all PA schedules were provided to HR in a timely fashion. (*Other includes auto, special projects, reassigned time, coordinators, distance ed and applied instrumentalists.)

Similarly, counselors will be paid based on scheduled work assignments on the following payrolls: June 15, June 29, July 13, July 27, August 10, August 24 and September 7.
  • Fall 2023 classes start dates: Please note that day, evening and online classes for this fall begin on Wednesday, August 30 (for 15-week and the first 7.5-week sessions). Saturday classes begin September 9 and Sunday classes begin September 10. The second 7.5-week session starts on October 25. The full fall 2023 calendar can be found on the SCCC website.

  • EC meeting dates: EC representatives should plan to attend monthly meetings in the upcoming academic year on the following dates, unless otherwise informed. Most meetings are held on Thursdays at 3:45. We currently anticipate that we will continue to meet via Zoom for the 2023-24 academic year.
