Editor's note: Below is the nomination submitted by Adjunct Assistant Professor of English Kristen Hoffman. Please join us in congratulating Lizzie McCormick! I am honored to nominate Elizabeth McCormick for the FA Member Excellence Award for Mentorship. Elizabeth exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding mentor, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to fostering professional growth, leadership and success within the college community. Her dedication to supporting her peers and students goes beyond expectation, making a profound impact on those fortunate enough to learn from her. Elizabeth has been an invaluable mentor throughout my professional journey, continually teaching me how to be a better professor, tutor and leader. She has consistently encouraged me to seek opportunities for growth, pushing me to present at SCCC Professional Development Day, propose an initiative to the administration that would serve as a blueprint for expanding the Ammerman Writing Center to an online audience and accept an Executive Council nomination in the union to which we both belong. Additionally, she has guided me through applying for fellowships, leadership roles and career advancements that I might have otherwise overlooked. Her tireless efforts in reviewing and refining my CV were instrumental in my pursuit of full-time employment as a professor. When I lost hope and stepped away from academia, it was Elizabeth who pulled me back, reminding me of my passion for teaching and the significance of my contributions to the field—ultimately leading to my securing a full-time position in the CUNY system. Beyond her personal mentorship, Elizabeth has actively created and participated in programs that enhance professional development for faculty and staff. She provides guidance to new members of our academic community, ensuring they feel supported and empowered. Whether through formal mentorship initiatives or informal but deeply impactful one-on-one support, she fosters an environment where educators thrive. Her leadership has helped countless colleagues build confidence, refine their skills and find meaningful engagement in their roles. Elizabeth does not simply offer advice—she leads by example, setting a high standard for dedication, perseverance and advocacy in education. Her influence has shaped not only my career but also the careers of many others who have had the privilege of learning from her. She is a role model of integrity, resilience and generosity, making her exceptionally deserving of this award. I cannot imagine a more fitting candidate for the FA Member Excellence Award for Mentorship. Elizabeth McCormick embodies the very essence of mentorship—lifting others up, guiding them toward their potential and ensuring that they too have the opportunity to succeed. I wholeheartedly recommend her for this honor. |
