FYI: Highlights from the Executive Council and other news of note
-
AAUP Advocacy Chapter: It has come to the FA's attention that an application has been submitted to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) for an advocacy chapter charter. Although anyone can submit such application, not every application results in a charter. As of the date of this newsletter, AAUP has not created any charter for a Suffolk County Community College chapter. Going forward, it is the FA's understanding that AAUP intends to follow both the language and the spirit of a joint organizing agreement currently in place between AAUP and the AFT, our national affiliate.

- Sean Tvelia stepping down as Executive Vice President: VP Sean Tvelia has announced to the EC that he has been nominated to serve as chair of the Ammerman department of physical sciences and chose to accept that nomination. Running unopposed, he will thus be chair and a member of the Guild as of August 2018.
The FA is grateful for his service as grievance officer and executive VP. During his tenure as an FA officer, he has helped hundreds of our members with many contractual issues and with the promotion process. His service in representing the FA on the Employee Medical Health Plan (EMHP) has been invaluable.
Sean's involvement, knowledge and passion for labor and union activism will be missed by the FA. Congratulations to Sean on his election as chair. We know the department of physical sciences will benefit from his leadership.
After he begins as academic chair, the Executive Council will appoint a new officer at the August 31 meeting.
