New Member Discussion Series

The name of this series reflects its particular benefit for newly hired faculty, but the conversations are open to all.

Taking Your Show on the Road: How to Participate in Scholarship while Teaching at a Two-Year School—Friday, February 19, 11 am to 12:15 pm. Mildred Green Room, Babylon Student Center, Ammerman Campus

• Faculty from various departments and disciplines—Dante Morelli (Communication), Michael Boecherer (English) and Murph Kinney (History)—reflect on finding time for writing, research, and other forms of scholarship at an institution where teaching is the focus. While describing their own personal paths to publication and conference presentations, panelists will offer advice and share resources for new hires looking to balance their day to day duties with professional and scholarly concerns.
  
  

The Art of the A-Form: What You Can Learn from My First Promotion Cycle—Friday, April 29, 11 am to 12:15 pm. Mildred Green Room, Babylon Student Center, Ammerman Campus

• Recently promoted faculty divulge the best and worst aspects of the nearly year-long promotion cycle, from friendly tips about how to organize your service on the A-form to meeting with your campus dean to review your application. This panel aims to present new members with an anecdotal view of what to anticipate when it comes time to apply for the next step (pun intended). To be used as a supplement to the annual Faculty Association promotion workshop, not as a substitute.

The Write Time

While we place a great deal of our effort into teaching at SCCC, the college is a stronger, smarter institution when our faculty participate in research and scholarship on a regional, national and global level. However, setting aside time for this participation in the face of teaching and service demands can be challenging.

The FA recognizes that writing, scholarship and research inform and refresh our teaching and our roles here in essential ways. Therefore we’ve implemented a new initiative to help faculty pursue these ends.

Once a month in the fall and spring semesters, the Mildred Green Room or the Eaton’s Neck Room in the Babylon Student Center (Ammerman Campus) has been reserved for faculty to devote time and space to writing. Bring your notepads, pens, looseleaf paper, laptops, books, etc.—and be prepared to work in a quiet, shared space for two hours alongside colleagues who also need to compartmentalize their time and effort.
