Be the EC: Welcoming new reps and seeking a few others

  EC takes action

The Executive Council is the policy making body of our union, but it does so much more. If your area has a vacancy, please join our team! (graphic by Cynthia Eaton)

Other than the membership itself, you'll be hard pressed to find a group within the FA that plays a more pivotal role in shaping the direction of our union than our 35 Executive Council (EC) representatives.

The EC is the policy making body of our union—and while our spring elections filled several seats, a few vacancies remain.

What is the EC?

The EC consists of the six at-large officers as well as the EC reps elected by the membership every two years. The EC meets once each month during the academic year to

  • discuss current issues and activities affecting the FA
  • approve committee and other FA appointments
  • approve the FA budget
  • certify election results
  • conduct other duties appropriate to the body.

EC reps also serve as liaisons between the FA and their respective constituencies. Prior to each EC meeting, EC reps contact their constituents to solicit questions or concerns, report all and any issues during the EC meeting, get feedback and then report back to the constituent and/or constituency.

EC meetings are typically held on the second Thursday of each month from 3:45-5:45 p.m. at Ammerman.

Welcome new reps!

You can find your designated EC representative on the FA website, and we hope you'll join us in welcoming our newest EC reps who were elected last spring. Members who are new to the EC as of this spring include:

  • Joan Cook, Ammerman rep for library and central administration
  • Ben Laudicina, Ammerman rep for counseling and cooperative education
  • Kerry Spooner, adjunct rep for English
  • Dean Karahalis, adjunct rep for humanities, arts, music & philosophy

Special elections to fill vacancies

A few vacancies remain on our EC, and we do not like having any constituency group unrepresented. Members in the areas below should watch for upcoming information about special elections to fill these EC seats (please note that all but the first are college-wide positions):

  • Grant rep for humanities
  • full-time PAs in instructional labs
  • adjunct rep for counseling, education, freshman & college seminar
  • adjunct rep for Guild, retirees and PAs & specialists in programmatic areas
  • adjunct rep for math
  • adjunct rep for science, engineering and automotive.

Please contact me if you have any questions about serving on the EC, the elections process or about your designated EC rep: cynthia@fascc.org.
